Company F of the Iowa First
Coat:
- Citizens overshirt
- 1st Iowa overshirt
- Citizens frock
- Citizens sack
- If you absolutely cannot manage any of the above options- citizens undershirt with no outer garment.
No Army Dress Coats or Fatigue Blouses.
At the time of the Battle of Wilson’s Creek they were wearing mainly rags. At the onset of their enlistments Company F along with some other companies were issued grey over-shirts. Many of these shirts had green or red trim. Because not a single one of these shirts survived the war let along the campaign we recreated these shirts based on accounts from the Mt.Pleasant Home Journal and Eugene Ware’s book “The Lyon Campaign.”
Trousers:
The company was originally issued grey trousers. But once again by the time of the battle these trousers were nothing but rags. So, any citizen style trouser will work.
- Citizen Trousers (all types)
- Grey trousers
Under no circumstances will ANY sky blue or dark blue military trousers be acceptable.
Hat:
- Citizen Hat (all styles)
- Dress hats (Hardee Hat)
No Forage caps or Kepi’s.
Footwear:
- Boots or brogans of correct period style.
Haversack:
- White contract haversack
- Citizen haversack
- Federal Issue tarred haversack
Canteen:
- Federal issue with grey or brown cover. Leather sling.
- Citizen canteen
It will be very hot so we recommend you have a canteen. No bullseyes, or sky blue/dark blue canteen covers.
Cartridge Box:
- .69 box of correct period construction. Must have sling.
Cap Pouch:
- Of correct period construction and stlye.
Scabbard:
- Scabbard may have either a sewn or two-rivet frog and must have a securely attached brass tip
Belt:
- Leather Keeper with US Buckle.
Weapon:
- 1816 or 1822 Conversion Musket
- ‘42 Pattern smoothbore,
No flintlocks, two band muskets, Enfields, ’55 or ’61 Springfield.
Make sure the weapon is clean!

Blanket:
- Blue Wool Blanket
- Citizen Blanket
No U.S. Brown blanket.
No gums, ponchos or ground cloths.
Make a bedroll. No knapsacks allowed.
